Gateway Volunteer

Help run the Gateway Centre

We're looking for volunteers to help in our Gateway Day Centre, working with homeless people. We enable homeless and vulnerably housed people to find sustainable solutions to their homelessness. We encourage people who use our services to learn skills that lead to further learning and employment, to improve their physical and mental health, to develop their confidence and self-esteem and to become more independent and involved in their community.

As a Gateway Centre volunteer, you will help us to provide services for homeless clients in our busy Day Centre. You will work as part of a friendly team of volunteers and staff to deliver the essential services we offer. Gateway volunteers are key to the smooth running of our day centre service. Along with providing food and basic necessities, you will ensure that our clients are aware of all the services we offer and that their contact with the 999 Club is meaningful.

You’ll need excellent communication and people skills as well as confidence and enthusiasm. You’ll be working with people who have varying degrees of vulnerability and can, at times, present with challenging behaviour. You don’t need to have worked with homeless people before, but a customer services background would be great.

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to progress to a career in health or social care.

Your duties will include:

• Preparing breakfast
• Laundry service
• Run the shower rota
• Chatting with homeless people
• Helping to solve problems
• Befriending
• Breakfast and lunch clear up

We’ll provide Level 2 Food Safety Certificate training.

We'll also provide a full induction, training in relevant skills and knowledge, supervision and monthly reflective practice.

We'll provide Lunch, cover any travel expenses and arrange a DBS check.

We ask you to commit to a minimum of one session a week for six months. Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:45am – 1pm or 12:30pm – 4pm or all day with a 1-hour lunch break.
