Women's Sanctuary Volunteer

As a Women's Sanctuary Volunteer you will be helping to support clients who use our Women's Sanctuary.

The Women’s Sanctuary at the 999 Club is a safe space exclusively for women. We provide a welcoming and supportive environment, both physically and emotionally. It is an inclusive space where diversity is celebrated, and differences embraced.

We aim to have a female volunteer in the Sanctuary whenever we are open. Our volunteer will be on hand to offer a warm welcome, a cup of tea and a supportive ear. If more specialist support is needed, our volunteer will be able to liaise with the Female Lead for referrals to be made to appropriate agencies or call for more urgent support should the need arise.

The Women’s Sanctuary meets different needs for different women some of whom are in moments of crisis – for some it is a space to rest, charge a phone and take a time out. Other women are seeking practical support, while others are looking to increase their social interaction and partake in activities (sewing, knitting, art groups, puzzles and games). As a result, volunteers here need a level of flexibility and patience.

As a Sanctuary volunteer you will be an essential part of running this service for women. You will be responsible for creating a warm and welcoming environment, ensuring the space is for women only and keeping the room looking nice. We also encourage volunteers to bring any personal passions to the space in terms of activities and resources.

Duties may include:

  • Assist clients
  • Liaise with the Female Lead to make referrals
  • Chat with clients
  • Help to solve problems
  • Befriending

Full induction, training in relevant skills and knowledge, supervision, monthly reflective practice will be given. We provide lunch and travel expenses and a DBS check. We ask you to commit to a minimum of one session a week for six months. Hours: Monday – Friday 9am – 12pm or 1pm – 4pm, or all day with a 1-hour lunch break.
