The Bridge Café Activities Volunteer



The Bridge Café is an out of hours service that offers an alternative to emergency department admissions for people in Lewisham who are in crisis, 365 days per year. The café is based at 999 Club in Deptford and offers a safe space in which individuals can access help and support when they feel unable to cope emotionally or mentally.

Responsible to: The Bridge Café Deputy Manager

Purpose of this role:

As an activities volunteer, you will be part of a team ensuring our clients who come to the centre in a crisis are welcomed and given the opportunity to engage in activities if they are able to do so. You will be befriending, supporting, motivating and empowering. Along with delivering activities, you will ensure that our clients are aware of all the services we offer and are encouraged to engage with them.  You will work alongside Peer Recovery workers to deliver activities and group work within a calm and nurturing environment.

Skills and attributes required:

You’ll need excellent communication and people skills as well as confidence and enthusiasm. The role would suit somebody with a warm, empathetic and non-judgemental approach to engaging with others. You’ll need to be committed, reliable and punctual.  Lived experience is not essential but is welcomed.

Duties may include:

  • Co-facilitating workshops and assisting with activities, projects and events
  • Empowering and encouraging clients to get involved
  • Befriending
  • Support the aims of the service in the delivery of person-centred and recovery-oriented approach

Full induction, training in relevant skills and knowledge, ongoing mentoring, supervision, monthly reflective practice.

We'll provide refreshments, cover travel expenses and arrange a DBS check.

We ask you to commit to a minimum of one session a week for six months.

Hours are:

Monday – Friday: 6pm – 11pm
Saturday—Sunday and Bank Holidays: 12pm—6pm or 6pm—11pm.
